Bobby Brink Makes Statement as Flyers Edge Bruins in Shootout
Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports

Bobby Brink says his goal is to earn a spot on the Philadelphia Flyers’ roster during training camp.

The diminutive right winger helped his chances Friday night.

Immensely.

Brink had an assist, the tying goal in the third period, and the winner on a gorgeous move in the shootout as the Flyers prevailed, 4-3, in an exhibition game in Boston.

The NCAA’s leading scorer when he played at the University of Denver in 2021-22, Brink collected 28 points (12 goals, 16 assists) for the Phantoms last season. He played only half the season because he was recovering from hip surgery.

The Flyers are 1-2 in the exhibition season.

Brink, 22, and Tyson Foerster, 21, who had an assist in the victory, are among the rookie wingers trying to win roster spots. One of the two might be in the opening-night lineup.

While the 5-foot-8, 169-pound Brink was the Philadelphia Flyers’ best player Friday, defenseman Travis Sanheim also had a strong performance. He played 28:13, had four shots on goal, three hits, three takeaways, and was plus-1.

Also noteworthy: Goalie Cal Petersen, who was awful in his Flyers debut, rebounded and stopped 16 of 17 shots. He is battling Sam Ersson and Felix Sandstrom for the No 2 goalie spot.

In a 6-0 loss to New Jersey in the Flyers’ first preseason game, Peterson allowed goals on four of the first seven shots before settling into the action.

Ersson stopped eight of 10 shots Friday. Flyers killer David Pastrnak scored twice against Ersson.

Breakaways

Joel Farabee and Ryan Poehling also scored for the Flyers. Poehling, who has two goals in the preseason, won 57% of his faceoffs and tallied on the power play. … The Flyers host the Devils at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday at 7 p.m. They then conclude their exhibition schedule with home games Monday (Boston) and Thursday (Islanders). The season starts Oct. 12 in Columbus against Ivan Provorov and the Blue Jackets.
