Mets Linked To Padres' Two-Time All-Star In Possible Surprising Trade
Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Mets need to make a few more additions if they want to be competitive in 2024.

New York won just 75 games last year despite high expectations. The Mets now need to change the way things are done in the organization. New York already has started this by bringing in former Milwaukee Brewers executive David Stearns to be the club's president of baseball operations.

The Mets have made some intriguing signings already this offseason by landing former All-Stars Joey Wendle and Luis Severino, but there's still more work to be done. One player who has been linked to the Mets as a possible trade candidate is San Diego Padres infielder Jake Cronenworth, according to Bleacher Report's Zachary Rymer.

"The Padres tried out Jake Cronenworth as their regular first baseman this year, but to say it didn't work would be an understatement," Rymer said. "Out of 18 players who logged at least 100 games at the cold corner, his .689 OPS ranked 17th ahead of only José Abreu.

"This is nonetheless a two-time All-Star we're talking about and one who could be easily worth the $80 million he's owed over the next seven seasons if he goes back to second base..." Cronenworth, 29, checks both boxes, and his arrival would give (the Toronto Blue Jays) the option of shifting breakout rookie Davis Schneider to third base. Even if he can't hope to replace his defense, he could hopefully account for Matt Chapman's offense there. Other Fits: Detroit Tigers, New York Mets."

It's unclear how likely a trade could be, but landing someone like Cronenworth would be a solid pickup. The 29-year-old has seen time at first base, second base, and third base throughout his big league career and could help out all over the diamond.

A move may not be likely, but if you're a Mets fan keep an eye on Cronenworth this offseason.
