The Dexter Fowler era is over.

According to Ben Nicholson-Smith, the veteran outfielder has requested to be released from the minor-league deal he inked back during spring training and he’s now a free agent.

Fowler has actually been hitting quite well for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, as he’s gone 5-for-12 across three games, but the team acquiring Bradley Zimmer from the Cleveland Guardians made it fairly inevitable that Fowler wouldn’t make his way to Toronto’s big-league roster.

As bad as Zimmer has been with the bat, he provides the team with a skill set that they’re looking for, which is somebody who can play well in centre field and who can provide speed on the bases. That might not necessarily be the case with Fowler, who’s 36 years old and missed almost all of last season after suffering an ACL injury in April.

In other Bisons-related news, infielder Otto Lopez has been activated from the Injured List. He had been on the shelf for the past couple of weeks due to an oblique injury.
