Only one skill position player from the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine remains unsigned following rookie minicamps
Kyle Robertson/Columbus Dispatch / USA TODAY NETWORK

The NFL Scouting Combine had over 300 players present this spring. And as we sit almost three weeks removed from the 2024 NFL Draft just one skill position player among that entire group remains unsigned as an undrafted free agent following rookie minicamps.

Mike Clay of ESPN shared Wednesday morning that Miyan Williams, a former running back from Ohio State, is the only quarterback, running back, wide receiver, or tight end who was invited to the NFL Combine this year who is not currently on an NFL roster. One quick glance at Williams' body of work will tell you that's a mistake.

Miyan Williams should be signed

Miyan Williams was a high three star recruit entering college back in 2020, but even then he was built like a feature running back at 210 pounds at age 18. However, due to the pandemic, limited practices, and limited games that year, he wasn't able to push through to earn many snaps as a true freshman. But throughout the next two seasons Williams emerged as one of the most efficient running backs in the nation, averaging over 6.5 yards per carry, more than 4.5 yards after contact per carry, and logging almost 40% of his yards on explosive runs of more than 15 yards.

Williams led the Ohio State Buckeyes in both rushing yards and touchdowns in 2022 with over 800 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. That team of course went on to just narrowly lose in the College Football Playoffs semifinal game to the eventual champions, the Georgia Bulldogs. For a player of Williams' caliber coming from a team that good to remain unsigned following rookie minicamps is absolutely mind boggling. So, what happened? Why is he still available?

Miyan Williams knee issues and recovery

After putting up incredible back to back seasons for the Ohio State Buckeyes, Williams unfortunately ended up missing a significant portion of the 2023 season due to issues with his right knee. And it wasn't just any simple injury either. It was reported that Williams was diagnosed with osteocondritis (an inflammation of the cartilage and/or bone in a joint). Williams tried to tough it out as long as he could, but he just wasn't the same player last fall:

"I literally played until I couldn't anymore. My knee kept locking up, and I just wasn't able to run."

Williams tried his best, but then had to be sidelined after he just simply could not run anymore last season. He had surgery in January, and he is still reportedly recovering now. Williams was present at the Bengals local pro day in April, but could not participate physically. It seems that teams are reluctant to sign him at the moment given his knee concerns.

Once he's fully recovered from surgery and can prove he'll stay healthy some lucky NFL team is going to get a potential steal in Miyan Williams. At 5'9", 229 pounds, he is an absolute bruiser who can add all sorts of value after contact and in the red zone. Let's just hope he gets healthy sooner than later.
