Denys Berinchyk (19-0, 9 KOs) had his dream come true on a night when his fellow countryman Oleksandr Usyk became the undisputed heavyweight champion. Berinchyk earned a split decision victory over Emanuel Navarrete (38-2-1, 31 KOs) to become the new WBO lightweight champion. The judges saw this: 115-113 for Berinchyk, 116-112 for Navarrete, and 116-112 for Berinchyk. It was a close fight, but in the end, Berinchyk landed the cleaner punches to earn the victory.

Berinchyk took complete control of the opening round. Navarrete barely threw any punches as he moved backward throughout the round. Navarrete was still looking to find his rhythm in the second round, while Berinchyk was aggressive and landed some clean, straight left hands. Navarrete would find his groove towards the end of the round.

Berinchyk landed a right hook that stood Navarrete right up and made him reset in the third round. Navarrete would later go into his zone, but most of his punches were missing and did not have the same effect as those in the lighter-weight classes. In the fourth round, Navarrete looked like his old self with right uppercuts coming from weird angles but landing. One of those caused Berinchyk’s legs to lock up, almost getting him into some trouble.

The fifth round was tough for the judges to score as Berinchyk and Navarrete would go blow for blow throughout the whole round. It appeared Berinchyk got the better of the exchanges, but Navarrete has a great poker face, so it was hard to tell if it did. Both fighters took it a little easier in the sixth round, but Navarrete seemed busier.

Berinchyk landed the cleaner punches in the seventh round, while Navarrete missed wildly with some of his. It was a typical Navarrete round where he threw a bunch of punches, hoping one of them would land. Berinchyk took complete control of the eighth round, which made Navarrete miss a lot. Berinchyk landed some hard, straight left hands that sent Navarrete back to the ropes. Berinchyk continued to land the more effective punches in the ninth round while Navarrete was missing wildly with his shots.

Navarrete started with a bang during the championship rounds as he landed his uppercuts, but Berinchyk finished the round strong. Navarrete came back strong in the 11th round, as there had to be a feeling he was down on the cards. Both fighters went blow for blow as they finished the fight strongly.

Brian Norman Jr. Breaks Giovanni Santillan’s Will For A Tenth Round KO

Brian Norman Jr. (26-0, 20 KOs) heard all the talk, and he knew a big performance was needed, and that’s exactly what he delivered. Norman knocked out Giovani Santillan (32-1, 17 KOs) in the tenth round of their fight. Santillan was a warrior in the fight, but his body gave up on him, leading to the knockout loss. Norman is now the Interim WBO welterweight champion.

In the first round, they wasted no time as Santillan and Norman went at it from the start. Santillan was more defensively sound on the inside when Norman tried to work and get his punches off. Santillan had more success with his four-punch combinations. Norman landed some hard right uppercuts on Santillan in the second round. He smothered some of the shots, but others got through. A small cut in the corner of the right eye of Santillan opened up, which was attended to at the end of the round.

Norman landed a straight right hand that opened up a cut on Santillan’s left eye in the third round. Norman was economical with his punches but was throwing them at the right time. He would throw with Santillan and, in those instances, would get hit but land hard uppercuts to Santillan’s chest. In the fourth round, Santillan tried to get inside and throw punches, but he used the same approach each time, and Norman would time him. When they were against the ropes, Norman would continue to throw a right uppercut to Santillan’s chest.

Santillan saw a ton of success early on in round five, but Norman came on later in the round and invited Santillan to come inside. Norman would land a right uppercut and straight right hand at the sound of the bell. It was a toe-to-toe sixth round as Santillan and Norman landed big shots at different moments. Towards the end of the round, both fighters did plenty of holding as they were spent from the offensive attack earlier in the round.

A headbutt in the seventh round caused a cut on Norman’s left eye. Norman had a productive round, as Santillan did not make any adjustments. Norman landed a straight right hand that bent Santillan’s left knee in the eighth, almost making him fall to the canvas. Santillan was hurt, and Norman kept landing punishing shots as the round ended.

Norman was breaking Santillan down; his face was a bloody mess in the ninth round. Norman kept landing some big shots, but Santillan could not get out of the way. In the tenth round, Norman landed a right uppercut that sent Santillan down for the fight’s first knockdown. Norman would jump all over Santillan and land a left uppercut that sent Santillan down again, but this time, the referee would stop the fight instantly. Norman was the heavy underdog going into this fight and had much to prove, as he put it all together tonight to win the interim title.
