The rookie mini-camp invitee that could shock everyone and make the Lions roster
Cody Scanlan/Holland Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Detroit Lions will be starting up their rookie mini-camp later this week on May 10th. All of their draft picks and undrafted free agents will be there looking to show what they've got. Then there's a handful of players that the Lions are bringing in to get a shot at making the Lions 90 man roster ahead of camp.

Last year the Lions had a guy show up and then make it. That was Eastern Michigan receiver Dylan Drummond. He wound up making the Lions practice squad and was with the team for most of the season. He's finished up the year with the Giants and is now a free agent.

There's a guy in this years group of invitees that has a real shot to make it with the Lions. That's Grand Valley State quarterback Cade Peterson.

Peterson was one of the very best players in Divsion 2. He was a finalist for the Harlon Hill award twice for starters. That's the Divsion-2 version of the Heisman Trophy. He was also GLIAC Player of the Year twice. He led Grand Valley State to a 33-5 record during his time as the teams starter.

The thing that's the real draw in terms of on field work is that Peterson can kill you in multiple ways. he's a sharp passer that 7,231 yards, 67 touchdowns and 26 interceptions in his time at GVSU. He's got an arm on him too.

When you watch him throw on film, one of the things you'll see is that he drops the ball right into the bucket a lot. He's got good depth perception out there. You don't see a lot of over or under throws. The ball just finds it's way to it's man. There were some risky throws that wound up paying off, but for the most part, he's sharp.

He handles pressure pretty well. The Laker offensive line really struggled in 2023. They allowed Peterson to get sacked 35 times. So you see a lot of scrambling from him to get out of trouble. He was able to do a lot with the ball on the rushing side of things. Peterson ran for 425 yards and six touchdowns in 2023. He ran for 1,686 yards and 21 touchdowns during his time as the teams starter.

The final part, and here's where things could help the most, he's a got a mind and good eye for the game. The Lions have shown that they like having players like that on the team. David Blough, Tim Boyle, Nate Sudfeld and Teddy Bridgewater all have that same thing in common. They're player/coach type players that have good football minds.

For Peterson, the way he sees the field and his athleticism could give him a good shot and making the 90-man roster and getting the opportunity to show what he can do at camp and during the preseason. From there, maybe he has shot at the practice squad.
