Even Mike Budenholzer admits the Suns need a point guard

The Phoenix Suns fell drastically short of expectations this season. They were swept by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the opening round of the playoffs. Part of Phoenix's problem is that its roster is incredibly imbalanced. Despite having three All-Star level scorers, the team doesn't have a point guard and has no legitimate depth on the bench.

During his inaugural news conference, Phoenix's new head coach, Mike Budenholzer, admitted that the team's lack of a point guard could be a concern. He noted how the team may need to address the position during the summer.

“There’s no doubt we need to look at the whole roster and talk about point guard. I’m sure it’s a hot button here… we need to think about it,” Budenholzer said. “We need to be able to play without one. We probably need to be able to have one. We need to be versatile… I think the point guard position has a place. We're gonna talk about it.”

The Suns will struggle to retool their roster. They are over the second tax apron, have few tradeable assets, and have empty draft stock. Outside of trading Kevin Durant , there aren't many ways the team can make legitimate moves to improve. Nevertheless, it's clear the Suns need a playmaker. The offense looked disjointed, with Bradley Beal running the show.

Devin Booker has made strides as a passer and on-ball creator, but his best role is always with him looking to score first and create second. It's more than that, though. A high-level point guard will also provide perimeter defense. They will know when to push the tempo and when to slow things down. That type of leadership was missing from the Suns roster this past season.

The Suns need to improve their roster. It's the only way Budenholzer can improve the team and help get them toward the level required to win a championship. Adding a point guard is the first step. More changes will need to happen. Otherwise, the Suns will endure another difficult season.
